Clinical Mental Health Counseling – This degree will prepare you to serve in settings such as community mental health agencies, hospitals, drug and alcohol treatment organizations, college/university settings, or in private practice. The CACREP accredited School Counseling specialty area leads to professional school counselor licensure through the Illinois State Board of Education. You’ll be ready to work in public and private K–12 school systems with a strong background in data-driven counseling. This master’s degree is designed for aspiring mental health counselors who want to treat mental illness and help clients reach their potential. Our innovative online delivery requires the students to study from Moodle, an online learning platform as well as to meet weekly in a live web conference session for a variety of learning activities including counseling practice, role-plays, and presentations.

Individuals who complete this program are eligible to apply for licensure in Georgia and certification from the Commission for Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. All students are advised to become knowledgeable of licensure requirements in the state in which they wish to practice.
The online addiction counseling degree can prepare you to counsel those with substance use and addiction disorders. The courses are focused on counseling theory, ethical practice, assessment and group counseling skill development. Or, choose a Christian online counseling program with an emphasis in addiction counseling to gain a strong biblical foundation while also learning how to help treat individuals with substance use and addiction problems.
That said, keep in mind that some master’s in counseling degree programs may be in the process of accreditation but have yet to complete it. According to CACREP’s standards, a master’s in counseling degree program should be at least 60 semester credit hours or 90 quarter credit hours, which generally translates to two academic years. Additionally, counselors must apply for licensure, which necessitates completing an exam and supervised postgraduate hours as mandated by the relevant state counseling board. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), has granted 8-year accreditation to the M.S. In Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) concentration at Nova Southeastern University. CACREP accreditation of the CMHC concentration includes the online delivery format, the traditional format offered at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus, and the weekend intensive/hybrid format offered at the Miami, Orlando, and Tampa Bay regional campuses. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization prepares individuals to provide evaluations, referrals, and short-term counseling services to help people prevent or remediate personal problems, conflicts, and emotional crises. Whether you are a practicing professional, seeking a career change, or following a dream or passion, our mission is to provide all of the information you need to pursue a career as a professional counselor, no matter where you live. Students demonstrate professional dispositions required for vocational success in the counseling fields, including an orientation towards multicultural and social justice counseling. Students demonstrate sufficient knowledge and skill aligned with core and specialty areas of the CACREP standards, including multicultural and social justice counseling competencies. Classes meet once a week and are offered in the late afternoon and evenings to accommodate students’ work and internship schedules. While classes are taught primarily in-person and on-campus, some classes may be offered fully online or through a hybrid format.
The faculty of the Counselor Education Program is dedicated to educating counselors as scholar practitioners who can effectively serve diverse populations. We prepare counselors who also seek opportunities to engage in outreach and advocacy through collaborative partnerships. The program provides opportunities for students to apply theory, research, knowledge, and skills through experiential learning, with an emphasis on wellness, prevention, and intervention. Our graduate counseling program is one of the largest in Illinois and produces skilled leaders in each of its

Our master’s degree program includes emphases in marriage, family, and couples counseling (MFCC); school counseling; and clinical mental health counseling. Both MCFC and school counseling tracks are CACREP-accredited, and clinical mental health is currently under review for accreditation. As part of the program’s pragmatic approach to preparing counselors, in addition to classroom studies, all students complete clinical experiences in the UCF Community Counseling and Research Center and field-based experiences in the community.
Based on your specialty area, you’ll take 60 to 90 quarter hours of core curriculum and specialty area coursework, as well as practicum, internship, and elective courses. We have developed relationships with local school districts and universities to ensure that our students have optimal opportunities to train for future work in academic settings. The Racial Empowerment Collaborative (REC) is a research, program development, and training center that brings together community leaders, researchers, authority figures, families, and youth to study and promote racial literacy and health in schools and neighborhoods. STEM OPT eligibleEligible F-1 students who finish their program of study and participate in an initial period of regular post-completion OPT (often for 12 months) have the option to apply for a STEM OPT extension (for 24 months).
